Alternative text: @alinazagaytova View from the top of the world. I cannot believe it has already been a month since our summit day on Mt. Everest! Being back in everyday life is so busy, there is always so much to do. I miss the mountains, their simplicity of life, their serenity, and even their fierceness where a single decision could mean life or death. Outside the mountains our world is so complicated, navigating the corporate scene this past week at work, has made me appreciate even more the wild, raw, and dangerous adventure of Everest. The tall peak in the distance is Mt Makalu, another 8,000 + meter peak that my amazing friends @gritandrock and @danielcastillolofthouse climbed this Spring. #everest #everest2017 #viewfromthetop #makalu #nepal #himalayas #athlete #adventure #simplelife #mtngirlpower #inspiration #mountains

Alternative text: When you get up to the high altitude of 5400m (17716 feet) on foot, there's this constant struggle and discomfort of switching between layering yourself up with thick winter jackets only to minutes later stop to strip down into thin under-layers of sweaters and open your backpack for dumping all that pile inside, because suddenly within minutes the weather has changed and now you're sweating profusely and feeling unnervingly claustrophobic. An act that otherwise obviously goes unnoticed in everyday's mundane life; but up there, where the air is thin and oxygen levels low, the effort is significant - one that cost you energy and mainly, momentarily pause your hiking rhythm that you'd rather leave uninterrupted. . Yet, you keep continuing on, barging through the cold high winds incessantly blowing in your direction, and as you push yourself against it climbing higher up one step at the time, there's hope lurking somewhere in the subconscious of not being afflicted by yet another sudden hailstorm like the one experienced the previous evening at high-camp when you climbed 200 meters up and back down a hill at the site, for sake of better acclimatisation. But then you look up at the sky and see the thick cloud moving away, finally revealing the bright sun, and, almost as an instant reflex, you get rid of your gloves, desperate to feel it's warmth on your palms but it doesn't make any sense because the temperature is still soaring below freezing point at -5 degrees. . You keep scaling up, moving forward, in short and slow strides, trying to control your breathing pattern, but fail, cause its feels like your always out of breath. Then suddenly, majestic folds of some more Annapurna ranges surface in your peripheral vision and that leaves you completely spellbounded, yet once again! By now you've lost count of number of times you've felt like that since you started this hike 10 days ago at 800m, or since you began to travel 4 months ago at the time - yet, each time the experience is unique. Your racing mind is finally still and it feels like you are exactly where you are meant to be! #annapurnacircuit #mtngirlpower #jai_nepal #himgeo @nomadicladkiya

Alternative text: @alinazagaytova The trip to Camp 1 was breathtakingly beautiful, felt incredibly privileged to be among such gorgeous mountain scenery. It was also very challenging, many ladder crossings through the icefall, steep ascents and what felt like a much longer route to higher altitude. Once the sun came out, it just sapped all the energy, felt like walking inside a stove with the sun beams bearing down on you. Today is a rest day in Camp 1, our team is doing well, dreaming about adventures ahead. #himalayas #mountaineering #everest2017 #teamwork #mtngirlpower

Alternative text: Congratulations!@alinazagaytova Summit success! Now safely back in Base Camp. Feeling grateful and happy. We left Camp 4 at 9:30 pm on May 22 and were the first team to summit on the South Side of Everest at 5:45 am on May 23. We were back at Camp 4 for breakfast at 8:50 am. It was very windy the entire night and picked up even more on the descent. Winds were blowing between 50-80 mph the entire time which made risk of frostbite very real, definitely lost feeling in toes and fingers at a few points during the climb, but the upside was we had the entire mountain to ourselves. No crowds, we didn't see or pass a single person on the way up, it was a gorgeous clear night but for the wind. It was impossible to stop for a rest for more than a few minutes plus my down suit zipper froze shut so couldn't get to my snacks. In the 12 hour push, I had one Stinger gel, one Stinger waffle on the way up and a few sports beans at the South Summit on the way down, hunkered behind some rocks from the wind. Maybe a half liter of water total. Hard to believe, but WE DID IT!!!! #done #everest #nepal #arcteryx #arcteryxdc #mtngirlpower #athlete @madisonmtng @garrettmadison1 @americanalpine

Alternative text: After the long wait, we are heading up to Everest Camp 2 this evening for our "summit rotation". Hopefully, the weather and our strength and mental toughness will align just right for a summit attempt in a few days. Feeling excited, nervous and ready to go! Would be nice to tag the last of my Seven Summits. Look forward to dedicating time to the Mountain Girl Power venture after the trip. Alternative text: Yesterday, we went up to Camp 3 on Everest at 23,000 feet (my new highest point - higher than the summit of Aconcagua), a few hours up the steep and icy Lhotse face. Definitely very challenging terrain at that altitude but our team did absolutely great! Wind was gusting all day, hopefully good training for summit rotation. Also, very grateful for the fixed ropes! It's hard to believe, but that red dot is me teletubby style in my down suit. Now, safely back in Base Camp resting for a few days, but for some reason it's hailing rain and snow outside my tent instead of warm sunshine. #everest2017 #mountaineering #highaltitude #lhotse #mtngirlpower #happy #himalayas #snowstorm

Alternative text: Tonight we are heading back up for a second acclimatization rotation on Mt. Everest. The plan is to spend 1 night at Camp 1 and 3 nights at Camp 2. If the weather and conditions permit, we will walk up and touch Camp 3 but will not sleep there yet. As I pack and get ready for this adventure on the eve of my Birthday, I am realizing that I am about to spend my second birthday in Nepal (and of course, I will be 22 again ;)). This incredible and beautiful country has a way of bringing people back to experience, explore, adventure and enrich their lives with things that are infinitely more valuable than money. Last year, I celebrated my birthday in the comforts of DC with many friends and family and kids of friends who were rightfully way more excited about the birthday cake than the adults. This year, I will be surrounded by majestic Himalayan mountains, a lot of ice, some cold, hopefully, not too much wind, and of course my supportive climbing teammates @madisonmtng. One of my teammates @andersmc_ has the same birthday as me, May 1 - so it will be a fun joint party! I couldn't wish for a better way to spend this Birthday - in pursuit of a dream, challenging myself alongside with other inspiring individuals and teams aiming at the same lofty goal. I couldn't be happier experiencing life in the extreme, finding fulfillment and beauty in nature, human achievement, and teamwork. But most importantly, I want to say the deepest, most heartfelt "Thank You" to my wonderful parents, who have raised me, supported me, protected me, loved me, put up with me all these years, every step of the way, and who continue to be my biggest supporters and protectors as I embark on this new goal of climbing Mt. Everest. My Mom sent me an early Birthday email that made me tear up over breakfast this morning and I can never express enough the affection and gratitude I feel for their endless love and support. ❤️❤️❤️. #parentallove #birthday #family. #team #everest2017 #mtngirlpower #highaltitude #mountaineering #love

Alternative text: We are back in Base Camp after a successful rotation to Camp 1 and Camp 2 (21,500 feet) on Everest. Our team spent 4 nights at higher altitude and the return to 17,600 feet feels like sea level. On our rest day at Camp 2, we hiked up a rocky moraine towards Everest West Shoulder (the route Ueli Steck will be climbing this season) to see breathtaking views of Nuptse, Lhotse and Everest. From our viewpoint, we could see our future route towards Camp 3 - very steep, icy unforgiving terrain, and then further towards the South Col. This entire steep section of the mountain will be fixed with ropes to help climbers use an ascender to move up the rope, rather than climbing it alpine style. But even with fixed ropes, this will be a tremendous effort at such high altitude and who knows what the weather will bring. Our last day and night at Camp 2 were cold and windy. Loud wind hailed at the side of our tent all night, a rather intimidating experience. We left Camp 2 at about 7:30 am to head back to Base Camp, we met about 50 Sherpas carrying loads from Base Camp to Camp 2 (oxygen, food, gear). They must have left Base Camp in the middle of the night to climb all the way to Camp 2 and most will be returning to Base Camp the same day - an amazing feat of mountaineering, athleticism and incredibly hard work. This mountain could be climbed only by very few individuals without the support and hard work of the Sherpa. I definitely feel immense gratitude for all their daily help, immense effort and amazingly good natured support of climbers, almost everyone we passed had a smile for us and a welcoming "Nameste". #everest2017 #mountaineering #climbing #sevensummits #arcteryxwashingtondc #mtngirlpower #passion with @madisonmtng

Alternative text: Traveling on Mt. Everest requires crossing many vertical and horizontal ladders. You have to clip a carabiner into each rope for safety, but the ladders are still pretty wobbly and walking across you can't help but stare into the endless crevassed abyss below you. It helps when someone holds the rope tight as you cross, but for me personally, the little feeling of inner terror at each horizontal crossing does not go away, although it has subsided a bit as I have gotten a few days of practice going across these contraptions. Here is hoping for safe and smooth crossings for the rest of this trip! And immense gratitude to the Sherpa icefall doctors who place and maintain these ladders to enable others to climb Mt. Everest. #everest2017 #womenempowerment #overcomingfear #icefalldoctors #extremeadventure #sports #mtngirlpower
